Lockdown: isolation vs solitude

Countries all over the world have had to lock down their cities at different times this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health issues have been exasperated by not only the loss of life and financial hardship but also because of the reality of isolation that a lockdown can bring. It forces us to look at ourselves, it gets us to really see if we enjoy our own company. This can very be challenging for most and even experienced meditators may have a feeling of loneliness. It’s one thing to be in solitude willingly but another thing to be forced to self-isolate.

Consider that one of the most severe punishments in most prisons and correctional institutions is isolation with little to no stimulation. It is no secret that isolation can be damaging if imposed on someone. I think we are forced to re-assess what we spend your days doing and really ask what our values are. Life is short and we get caught up in the day to day that we forget just how fast time goes.

I feel that this isolation may not be what we wanted but maybe what we needed as a global community. So how will you turn this challenge into an opportunity? What have you learned about yourself? What dreams have you been procrastinating on doing for years? Which person have you wanted to call and tell them how much you love them?

Just thoughts.
